Abstract. Investigation of deep faults overlain by sedimentary cover is currently an important and essential problem in seismic hazard assessment of critical facilities (nuclear, chemical, etc.). As a way to solve it we propose the complex application of two independent methods: radon emanation survey and microseismic monitoring. This complex is highly effective, simple, and relatively cheap as compared with other methods. This paper presents the results of complex data processing of radon survey and microseismic monitoring of the objects located near the Roslavlsky fault (Smolensk region). The exact location of the fault has not been found before the present study. Therefore it complicated the hazard assessment of critical facilities including the Smolensk NPP and significantly decreased the accuracy of determination of the Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE) and Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE).
