Abstract. This paper discusses the wide-spread occurrence of horizons of inversion of elastic characteristics in the geological medium. They are observed in the upper mantle and the Earth’s crust. One of their distinctive features is their extension that can reach hundreds of kilometers.

We discuss the possible nature of such horizons, and their role in transformation of the oceanic Earth’s crust into continental, fluid convection, and deformation shielding.

Keywords: horizons of inversion of elastic characteristics in the geological medium, interpretation, seismic data.
