Abstract
The Altai earthquake of September 27, 2003 is the strongest on the territory of Russia in the recent decades. During 2004 and 2005 field campaigns more than 2000 events were registered by 12 digital seismic stations established in the region of the Altai earthquake by Laboratory of the strong earthquakes of the Schmidt IPE RAS. We selected 110 aftershocks recorded by at least 8 stations to determine focal mechanisms of aftershocks from the first motion polarity of the P-waves and to reconstruct of stress-state.
The main geodynamic regime in the studied area are shown to be the horizontal compression and vertical shear, which are indicative of block mountain formation mechanisms.
Keywords: aftershocks mechanisms, stress.
